The Art of Editing

This is an essential course for anyone who's serious about their photography and wants their images to look great. Photographers, even pros, are terrible at editing their own images. Yet choosing the right image is critical whether you are simply doing it for a family album, to make a print for your home, exhibition or portfolio, to submit to a stock library or to get a commission.

Editing begins with composition and framing in camera but once you have a selection of images, choosing the best ones is critical. On this course we'll be looking at the whole process from taking a selection of images though to choosing which ones to keep for different uses. The image you select for a framed print isn't necessarily the same one, or cropped the same, as you would send to a picture library or put on an online gallery.

We'll be reviewing and critiquing your images, discussing how images are used in different types of media as we go and to help us do this we will be joined by the Head of Axiom Photographic Agency, Erin Moroney. Erin will be involved throughout the course and is highly experience in the art of editing. Her daily involvement with running a photographic library means she knows exactly what picture editors and commissioning editors are looking for from image submissions.

"With the camera, it's all or nothing. You either get what you're after at once, or what you do has to be worthless. I don't think the essence of photography has the hand in it so much. The essence is done very quietly with a flash of the mind, and with a machine. I think too that photography is editing, editing after the taking. After knowing what to take, you have to do the editings."
